Welcome to Broad Brook School!

At Broad Brook School we focus our energy on literacy and creating an inclusive, nurturing learning environment for all children. In order to create a positive school climate we practice the philosophies of Responsive Classroom and Positive Behavior Supports (PBIS). As a Responsive Classroom school we create caring communities within our classrooms. All children articulate their hopes and dreams at the beginning of the school year, which are used to create the rules of the classroom. At Morning Meeting the children begin each day greeting each other and working together with their classmates. In addition the teachers work with children to teach them how to resolve problems peacefully and demonstrate self-discipline. For more information about Responsive Classroom: www.ResponsiveClassroom.org.

Through (Positive Behavior Supports)PBIS we have clearly articulated our behavior expectations for all children in all areas of the building. We explicitly teach children expected behaviors and notice when they have met those expectations. Next time you enter Broad Brook School, you will notice banners and posters with our ABC’s:
          Always do your best,
          Be respectful, and
Care for ourselves, each other, our school.
Children may receive a verbal positive reinforcement or a PAWfection. The PAWfections are a visual reinforcement of their efforts and success towards meeting our behavioral expectations. For more information about PBIS: www.PBIS.org

Our focus on literacy is clearly defined and all of our goals and efforts are directed towards this focus. All BBS students will show measurable growth in reading comprehension by using the structure of the workshop model and focusing on specific Marzano Instructional Strategies as measured by the Benchmark Assessment System (BAS), grade level Common Formative Assessments (CFA) and the Connecticut Mastery Test (CMT).

At Broad Brook School-We read, we think, we share our thinking, we succeed!

In order to further ensure that we are all working together on our instructional focus five promising practices have been selected: Think-Pair-Share, Questioning, Modeling, Visual Clues, and Differentiated Instruction. Teachers are working to refine their practice of each of these instructional strategies/methodologies and incorporate them into their daily instruction.

If you have any questions or would like more information, please contact your child’s teacher, Ms. Duenzl or Mrs. Foxx.

**ANNOUNCEMENTS**

Connecticut Physical Fitness Assessment

Every student in fourth grade will be tested on the four components of the Connecticut Physical Fitness Assessment.  In the following link below are videos and cadences of the four components: push ups, curl ups, back saver sit and reach, and the pacer test.  These videos and cadences were made possible by the Connecticut State Department of Education and as the physical education teacher of BBS I believe it's important for the students of BBS to view and practice these exercises.
