WELCOME TO THE EAST WINDSOR HIGH SCHOOL WEBSITE.

Hello to all members of the East Windsor Community!

After a well deserved February vacation, we have resumed the good work of providing the best possible educational experience for the high school students of our community.  March promises to be a very busy month, dominated by CAPT testing.

As I said in my prior message, our goal is to continue focusing on instruction during the testing period.  As such, it is expected that all students who are not participating in CAPT testing will attend all classes during the testing period.  We will not be modifying the length of the school day for any students, although the order of periods may change from day to day.  Please consult the school website for the actual CAPT schedule.

A few test taking tips for students and parents:

1)  Get a good nights rest prior to a test date.
2)  Have something to eat before the test session.
3)  Arrive on time.  Late arriving students will not be admitted to the test session and must make up a missed assessment at a later time.
4)  Carefully respond to all questions on the test.  Sometimes one question may have several parts.
5)  Be careful to grid responses to Math questions carefully.
6)  Relax.  You cant study for the CAPT!  All your experience in school to date has prepared you for this test.

Also during the past month, East Windsor High School hosted our first Poetry Out Loud competition.  This contest, planned by our English department, was attended by a large number of parents, as well as a very large number of students.  16 students representing all four grades recited poems and were judged on several criteria.  Our school wide winner, Nichol McCarter, will represent EWHS at the statewide competition on March 16th at St. Josephs College in West Hartford.

There will be a terrific fundraiser on Saturday, March 13 at the high school, hosted by the East Windsor Police Union. Kicking off the evening at 5:00 there will be a pasta dinner in the high school cafeteria followed by a basketball challenge between East Windsor Public Safety Services and Junior and Senior students of the Boys and Girls High School basketball teams.   All proceeds from this evenings events will be donated the Graduate and Celebrate. If you prepurchase your game ticket, you will be given $2.00 off the price of the pasta dinner.  If you come to the pasta dinner, you will be given $2.00 off the price of the game. Tickets for both events are $10.00.  For more information or to purchase tickets, please contact Officer Ostrikis at the high school at 860-623-3361 ext 7353.

The Board of Education, by consensus, has given us permission to proceed with our work in developing a new master schedule for the high school.  An interdisciplinary committee of faculty researched a number of scheduling models and recommended a schedule that will:
1)Emphasize depth versus breadth of instruction and understanding.
2)Provide opportunities for all students to participate in club activities.
3)Allow all students to receive specialized instructional enrichment or intervention based on their needs.
We plan to pilot the proposed schedule in May and hope to receive final Board of Education approval for this change shortly after the pilot period.   This is a major change for our school, a change that we need in order to become a 21st century learning community.

I hope to see many of you at the upcoming Choral Concert on March 3rd at 6:30 pm in the high school auditorium.  This combined Middle/High School performance will be followed by a public meeting in the school cafeteria where the Board of Education will be making their budget proposal to the Board of Finance.

As always, please feel free to contact any member of the high school community with questions.

Sincerely,

Liam S. O’Reilly, Principal
East Windsor High School

HELP LINE

The East Windsor Police Department School Resource Officer maintains a telephone line which allows callers, wishing to remain anonymous, to leave information which they believe to be unsafe for students at school.  All calls will be recorded on a voice message system.  There is no way to identify or contact the caller unless they leave that information in their recorded message.

Starting immediately, the line will be open 24 hrs per day, 7 days per week.  The East Windsor School Resource Officer posted at the high school will check the line twice a day during school days. When a person calls the HELP LINE they will hear the following message:

“Thank you for calling the HELP LINE.  If this is an emergency, please hang up and dial 911 now.  To report a concern about safety at one of the schools in East Windsor, please listen carefully to the rest of this announcement and wait for the tone to leave your message.  After you hear the tone, state clearly and slowly the name of the school, a description of the unsafe situation, and provide the names or descriptions of the persons involved to the best of your ability.  You do not need to leave your name.  Please remember, the more information we receive the better we can assist you and the safer your schools will be.  Thanks for your call” (TONE)

The HELP LINE number is 463-7248

In working toward our NEASC accreditation, we have rewritten the East Windsor High School Mission Statement.   We have added a link to the values and beliefs around our Mission Statement on the high school homepage in an audio CD format. Former East Windsor High School student, Kwame Dankwa, is the narrator. Mr. Dankwa is a musician and radio personality at local station WDRC-AM where he hosts a Sunday morning program at 8:00 a.m. called "Your Town, with host Kwame Dankwa" focusing on the people and issues that matter most to Hartford and its surrounding communities. Mr. Dankwa graduated from East Windsor High School, class of 2003.
